It is mandatory for anyone living in Belgium to sign up for health insurance. This is a legal requirement that also applies to students. It is essential to carefully determine the type of health insurance coverage you need.

Health insurance for EEA citizens

If you are a national of the European Economic Area (EEA), you will need to obtain a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) from your health insurance provider in your home country before travelling to Belgium.

If your health insurance provider in your home country cannot provide an EHIC, you need to register with a Belgian health insurance provider.

Health insurance for non-EEA citizens

If you are a non-EEA national you will need to sign up for compulsory local insurance coverage in Belgium upon arrival. Some of these providers will be present during the welcome week.

It will take a few weeks untill you have local health insurance. To bridge this period, you need to be covered for the first month of your stay by travel insurance.

Documents for visa?

When applying for a student visa you may need to provide proof of health insurance coverage in Belgium for the duration of your studies.

This intention of insurance can be requested by contacting any of the Belgian health insurance providers. For instance, you can contact the provider Helan at students@healthinsurance.be.

From the UK?

The UK Global Health Insurance Card (UK GHIC) replaces the existing European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) in most cases.
