New: Master of primary Education

The Master of Primary Education is a new programme that will be offered from the 2025-2026 academic year. This programme is designed to further professionalise teachers with teaching qualifications in pre-primary and/or primary education. The focus is on strengthening teaching practice and supporting quality assurance processes within schools.

Alumni participated in labour market event Sociology and SES

On 25 April, 50 enthusiastic students from the Sociology and Socio-economic Sciences programmes participated in the panel discussion of the labour market event. The panel consisted of three alumni: Hanne Van Looveren, Daan Neels, and Isabelle Goosenaerts. What a great opportunity for students to interact with alumni and share their knowledge and experience!

MOOOV Filmfestival

The annual trip to the MOOOV Film Festival took place on 22 and 23 April. Master students of Film Studies and Visual Culture were given an interesting introduction to Palestinian cinema. Filmmaker, producer and cultural arts manager Hanna Atallah shared insights, and Marc Boonen gave an insight into the artistic workings of this vibrant festival. The students also delved into a selection of films that have a special connection to Sub-Saharan Africa.

University of Antwerp Award on MOOOV

This year, ‘Son Hasat’ (2023, Turkey/Bulgaria) by Cemil Agacikoglu received the University of Antwerp Award at the annual MOOOV Film Festival. A jury of five students, consisting of Iman Boot, Ygaël Nys, Margot Leyers, Hava Masaeva and Quinten Matthyssen, reviewed all the films in the competition and crowned this bittersweet allegorical tale about people deviously seeking a better life. The Award, which has been presented by the University of Antwerp since 2020, provides a distribution bonus that enables the screening of the film in Belgium.

These clusters replace former graduate courses and offer a fresh, multidisciplinary approach to our curriculum. They are designed to prepare students for the dynamic and rapidly changing world of communication and media.

Safe-the-date for alumni Safety Sciences

On Wednesday 26 June, celebrate with us the graduation of the 10th batch of Masters in Safety Sciences as well as the renewal of the curriculum during a special event. All alumni of the Safety Sciences programme are cordially invited to commemorate this milestone.

Alumni International Relations and Diplomacy

On 18 April, the International Relations and Diplomacy programme organised its first alumni event. Over 60 alumni and current students gathered in the widely known Meerminne building for a lecture by Professor Tom Sauer on the war in Ukraine and the need for a Western policy striving for diplomacy and peace negotiations. After an in-depth reflection by former Colonel Roger Housen and an animated round of questions, attendees enjoyed a reception, where fond memories and new experiences were enthusiastically shared.

Interdisciplinary Project (IP) Poster Fair: Discover Innovative Results!
On Wednesday 26 June, we will present the results of the Interdisciplinary Project (IP), a course from the Master's in Training and Education Sciences. The various IP groups spent a year working on authentic questions from external organisations.
Curious about their work? Come along and discover the innovative results at our poster fair! Wednesday, 26 June, from 19:30 at De Meerminne, Sint-Jacobstraat 2, Antwerp. Participation is free, but registration is required.

New Faculty Team

In September 2024, a new team will take the helm of the Faculty of Social Sciences: led by Sven De Maeyer as dean, with Peter Van Aelst, Heidi Vandebosch, and Peter Raeymaeckers at his side.
With a focus on well-being, efficiency and long-term planning, this team promises to build on the strong foundations laid by previous teams. Our faculty is thriving thanks to the dedication of all colleagues, and this team is determined to continue this.
Together, we are building a faculty where everyone feels at home and where decisions are made with an eye on tomorrow.

One is a versatile artist who wants to achieve intercultural connection, the other has made the fight against abuse in the Catholic Church his life's work. At the end of March, the University of Antwerp welcomed two special general-merit honorary doctors to its ranks. Four top foreign scientists were also lauded that day.
