Inaugural Lecture Professor Peter Libby

We are very honoured to welcome Professor Peter Libby, Cardiovascular Specialist at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Mallinckrodt Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, as Visiting Professor of the Princess Lilian Foundation this year.

His inaugural lecture, Inflammation - A unifying feature of many diseases, will be given on Monday 17th March 2025 at 5:45 pm in Aula Fernand Nédée at Campus Drie Eiken of the University of Antwerp.

Professor Peter Libby

Peter Libby is MD and cardiovascular specialist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He holds the Mallinckrodt Professorship of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

His areas of clinical expertise include general and preventive cardiology. His current major research focus is the role of inflammation in vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis. He instigated the first large scale clinical trial that provided clinical validation of the role of inflammation in atherosclerosis.

He has trained generations of fellows and residents, many of whom now occupy leadership positions worldwide.

Princess Lilian Foundation

In 1958, after her son, Prince Alexandre of Belgium, underwent heart surgery in the United States, Princess Lilian de Réthy created the Princess Lilian Foundation.

The Foundation aimed to offer children with cardiovascular malformations the opportunity to benefit from pioneering interventions developed in the United States.

Ever since, the Foundation has redirected its work towards the sponsorship of visiting professors, enabling leading foreign scientists to visit Belgian universities and interact with young researchers.
